But "Savage Garden" is perfectly suited to Nielsen's merrily ga-ga sense of humor. In fact, this offbeat special edition of the "National Geographic Explorer" series arrives as a weekend eye-candy treat Nielsen is best known for his slapstick portrayal of cuckoo cop Lt. Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun" movies.
In "Savage Garden," he's an equally hapless Ron Eldard who will leave the show after several episodes at the beginning of next season. The only holdover? Former "Saturday Night Live" joker Rob Schneider. Bateman, Eldard and Schneider battled producers last year because "Men. wasn't as boda-ciously irreverent as the British sitcom on which it was based. The show may be even less outrageous next year.
That's when it moves into the 8 p.m. Sunday time slot opposite CBS powerhouse "Touched by an Angel." Schneider will have new costars. Later, however, we bump into some burying beetles, undertakers of the insect world, as they grapple with the corpse of a pesky shrew.
"Literally excited by the smell of death, the pallbearers take time out to mate," says Nielsen, gawking at the lusty little critters. "Couldn't they find a roach motel?" "Savage Garden" is not your typical "National Geographic" documentary. It's refreshingly different. And the agreeable combination of loopy Leslie Nielsen and those surreal insect visuals, as well as producer John Rubin's witty script, make this a garden of dizzy delights.
